Along with the big names, there is the name of a woman social worker from Jharkhand included in this list. This lady was tortured by the society and was called a witch. But now the Government has decided to honour her with Padma Shri award.

    Who is this lady?

The name of this lady is Chuttani Mahato. She was once ostracized by society as a witch, but now, is fighting a battle against witch practice. She is a resident of Birbans in Seraikela district of Jharkhand.
Until now, she has saved hundreds of women from this practice. The 60 years old woman, runs an organization of 90 women. All of these women are tortured with the same practice.

    Her painful story

In 1995, Chhutani Mahato was thrown out of the house by the people of his village. They called her a witch. Her husband didn’t support her. The only thing she had with her was her 4 children and the open sky under which she lived. However, she did not give up. She decided that she would end the evil practice of harassing a woman from society.

She is still very angry from her villagers and her husband who abandoned her. She says that ‘if I were a witch, I would have eliminated those oppressors but there is nothing like that’. She told that ‘On the insistence of Ojha, the villagers committed such a crime which even a civilized society cannot imagine. It is my aim to honor women and this struggle will continue till death.’
