BJP MLA Sangeet Som indulged himself in some fresh controversy when he said that the Taj Mahal was built by traitors and should get no place in history. He went a step further and termed the Mughal-era monument as a “blot on Indian culture”.
Referring to the recent removal of Taj Mahal from the Uttar Pradesh tourism booklet, Som said – “Many were sad when the Taj Mahal was removed from historical places.”
“What history? He [Shah Jahan] wanted to wipe out Hindus. If these people are part of our history, then it is very sad, and we will change this history.”- Som further claimed.
In October, Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage site, had failed to feature in Uttar Pradesh’s recent tourism booklet namely ‘Uttar Pradesh Paryatan-Apaar Sambhavnayen’. The booklet was released to mark six months of Yogi Adityanath’s government.
Mr. Som is known for his inflammatory speeches and is among the politicians charged with instigating riots that leftover 60 dead and tens of thousands displaced in Muzaffarnagar in 2013.
However, his party senior Nalin Kohli disowned the comments and said: “That is his individual view. Taj Mahal is an important part of our history. It’s part of incredible India. What happened in history cannot be erased but at least it can be well-written history.”
The AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi targeted the entire BJP for the statement made by Som and gave a stinging response saying – “Traitors also built Red Fort, will Modi stop hoisting Tiranga (tricolor) (from there)”?
Owaisi took it one step further and asked if the PM would also stop hosting foreign dignitaries at the Capital’s iconic Hyderabad House, because that, too, was built by “traitors”.
Even the Twitter users have been fuming over the statement made by Som and the micro-blogging platform have been flooded with reactions. It remains to be seen how will Som defend his ‘irresponsible’ statement.
