There was a wave of excitement everywhere among the Congress party members as Rahul Gandhi was taking on as the new Congress president. Though this move marked an all-new phase of Congress party it also gave rise to a new question that is the future role of Sonia Gandhi.
A day ahead of Rahul Gandhi taking over as Congress president when she was asked the similar question she said: “My plan is to retire”. Before any reaction could have popped up Congress party clarified all the rumours.
“Sonia ji has retired as president of the Indian National Congress and not from politics. Her blessings, wisdom and innate commitment to the Congress ideology shall always be our guiding light,” said Congress media-in-charge Randeep Surjewala
Sonia Gandhi has not participated actively in past 6 months which increased rumours about her full-time retirement. She also had stopped making new appointments. However, one of the party’s MP tried to clear the air “Sonia ji just wants leave the slate clean, give total freedom to Rahul. That is why she is not meeting people,” said the Rajya Sabha MP.
Many thought that Priyanka is groomed to take the charge of Congress from her Mother, although Priyanka has campaigned for Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the past she has been away from active politics in past few years.
Rahul Gandhi seems to have taken all the responsibility himself which has let Sonia Gandhi take a backseat. We saw Rahul Gandhi who was the main campaigner for Congress in Gujarat Vidhan Sabha elections.
Sonia Gandhi has done very well as the party president but now when she is retiring, there is a lot of work to be done by the new party president to get things back to the place and prepare in a completely new way for the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
