Self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who was found guilty of raping two women followers by a court in Haryana’s Panchkula has found strong support in BJP lawmaker Sakshi Maharaj.
Sakshi Maharaj said the chief of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect is being “harassed”.
Sakshi Maharaj, the self-proclaimed godman and Bharatiya Janata Party politician, has been grabbing the headlines ever since he was elected to the Lok Sabha for his controversial statements.
He once again came up with a controversial statement when he questioned the Court’s verdict on Ram Rahim Singh and said – “One person has complained of rape against Ram Rahim. Crores others believe he is God. Who do you think is right?”
He went on to target the judiciary saying- “If even bigger incidents take place, the court will also be responsible not just Dera people, there is so much of ruckus over it, law and order have been disturbed, people are dying…Shouldn’t this be a consideration?”
Known to invite controversies by his statements, Sakshi Maharaj once again finds himself in a spot of bother as the women activists demanded that he should be put behind the bars on charges of contempt of court for supporting rape convict Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and disrespecting court’s verdict.
Women activist Heena Jahir slammed him and said – ‘Sakshi Maharaj falls under the same category that is why he is supporting such person. Does he mean to say that a court should listen to the supporters of a rapist? I would suggest that court should put Sakshi Maharaj behind the bars on charges of contempt of court. He is supporting the culprit and disrespecting courts order.’
Offensive communal remarks are perhaps the mildest of offences that Sakshi Maharaj has been indulged in as a look at his past reveals that the saffron-clad Swami has faced serious charges, including that of murdering Brahm Dutt Dwivedi, a cabinet minister in the Kalyan Singh government, and of expulsion from the Rajya Sabha for allegedly misusing MPLAD funds.
Sakshi Maharaj has been twice accused of rape charges and has even spent a month in Tihar jail for the same. His comments, therefore, didn’t come as a shock to many.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Kailash Vijaywargiya has lashed out against Maharaj and said that the party does not support his stance. It was not right on his part to question the judicial system, Vijaywargiya said.
The Narendra Modi-led Government has been making some giant strides towards good in the past few months and the presence of such ill-minded people will only tarnish their image in the eyes of the common people. Narendra Modi has taken strong actions in the past and we expect him to do the same this time by taking some strict action against Maharaj and pave way for an able minister to take the place of the self-proclaimed Godman.
