Rape convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim sentenced to 10 years in jail

A special CBI court sentenced the rape convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh to 10 years in prison as he was announced guilty of raping two women in a 2002 case.

During the arguments before the sentencing, the prosecution said no leniency should be shown and demanded the maximum sentence for Gurmeet Ram Rahim. The defense argued that the Dera chief is a social worker who has worked for the welfare of people, so the judge should take a lenient view.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim was on Friday ruled guilty of rape by the special CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana. He was immediately taken into judicial custody but his followers in Haryana and Punjab went on the rampage resulting in the death of 38 people and crores of damage to public property.

No reports of violence have been recorded since quantum of the sentence has been announced.

Punjab CM Amarinder Singh was quoted saying soon after the judgment, “This (sentence) must be accepted by the people and peace must prevail.”

The Army was seen flag marching in Sirsa in Haryana after Ram Rahim was sentenced in a 15-year-old rape case by the court.
