Rahul Gandhi finally took over as Congress party’s president on Saturday taking over the charge from his mother Sonia Gandhi who was the leader in charge from the year 1998. The 134-year grand old party has not had a good time as it was reduced to just 44 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The second decade of the 21st century has made Congress seen a large number of downs. Many party members started increasing their voice to hand over the command of the oldest political setup of the country to Rahul Gandhi. Though he was made the vice president ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, party fared very badly in the elections which were probably its worst ever.
This defeat was followed after humiliating defeats in states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh and Delhi which eventually started the strings of defeat which followed thereafter. Only positive came in the form of victory in Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections.
On the day Sonia Gandhi the preceding president, said “Indira ji sacrificed family for nation. She taught me the basic values that made the Constitution. When she was assassinated, I felt like my mother was gone. Those days I wanted to keep my husband and children away from politics. My husband was given the onerous responsibility to lead the nation. But then, my husband was killed and I lost my anchor – it took me time to stabilize after that.”
Sonia Gandhi then talked about how she took charge of the weakening Congress after the demise of her husband Rajeev Gandhi she termed the revival of Congress into Indian politics as a collective effort. She was in all praise for Former Prime minister Manmohan Singh. Former Congress president also said that aim of Congress is country and not power.
Talking about Rahul she said “Rahul is my son and not proper for me to praise him. But I have to say, from his childhood, he has faced the brunt of violence and since he came into politics he has been facing vicious personal attacks too. I am proud of his patience and I am sure he will lead you with pride and intelligence”
“Twenty years is like a lifetime. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your love and affection. Jai Hind”. Concluded former Congress President.
