Patriotism has proven to be the flavor of the month. To instill patriotism in students, the administration plans on organizing rock concerts and quizzes focusing on patriotism as the theme at top universities as a major aspect of festivity for 70th Independence Day.
With rock concerts and quiz competitions, the government wants to instill patriotism in college students in a manner that interests them. The University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Human Resource and Development (HRD) Ministry has issued a guideline to colleges across the country to organize activities aiming to sensitize students towards freedom struggle and Quit India Movement.
A host of rock bands will perform at elite institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and central universities such as the Delhi University from August 9 to 13, singing patriotic numbers, said sources in the human resource development (HRD) ministry.
A senior HRD minister commented, “A number of rock bands have been identified by the information and broadcasting ministry, and 100 institutions that have adequate space to accommodate at least a thousand persons will be selected. All institutions have been asked to participate in the event.”
The ministry has decided to conduct quizzes amongst college going students focusing on the Quit India Movement and the struggle for freedom. All higher educational foundations, both specialized and non-specialized, will participate.
“Institutions will be sent questions related to the quiz and they will organize it within the campus. Out of these, a final selection will be done and 10 students will get a chance to meet the Prime Minister,” added the official.
