AAP MLA Surender Singh, the army commando turned politician, has been taken into judicial custody for non-appearance in a case related to defacement of public property. According to PTI, the ‘Commando’ has been sent to custody till August 17 by Delhi’s Patiala House Court.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ashu Garg on Saturday ordered police to take Commando in the custody when he appeared before the court. Despite the court’s directions, he was not appearing before the court for the last few occasions despite orders.
In an earlier case, ex-BJP MLA Karan Singh Tanwar in his election petition had challenged Singh’s election “on the grounds of non-declaration of government dues, non-furnishing of financial status and income tax returns, as well as incorrect disclosure of his educational qualification in his nomination papers.”
In his nomination papers, he had mentioned that he has graduated from Sikkim University when he had actually graduated from EIILM University in Sikkim. He had claimed that the mistake wasn’t intentional, and the court had agreed to his statement that it wasn’t deliberate. But he was accused of possessing a fake bachelor’s degree and was served a Delhi High Court notice for the same.
He was also arrested in 2015 on the grounds of assaulting an NDMC worker.
It is a major setback for the Aam Aadmi Party.
