Gorakhpur Hospital tragedy returns: 61 children die in the last 3 days

As many as 61 children have died in the last 72 hours at BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur where 70 infant deaths were reported three weeks ago, from various causes including oxygen shortage.

In the last 24 hours, 19 children have died at the Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College, four of encephalitis. The rest were babies who died in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

BRD Medical College’s officiating principal PK Singh confirmed the deathsHe said that 16 of the children died in ICU. “Many children in critical condition are coming to our hospital. We are receiving nearly 256 children every day. Until midnight on 27 August, there were 342 patients in the pediatrics department, of whom 17 died. Until midnight on 28 August, there were 344 patients on the bed; 25 of them died.”

BRD is the same hospital where nearly 60 children had died due to lack of oxygen supply between 7 and 11 August, in what was clearly a case of grave medical negligence.

Over 70 children died at the biggest government hospital in Gorakhpur in early August and horror has returned again within a month. The tragedy at the Gorakhpur hospital had prompted a public outcry. The chief minister formed a committee to probe the deaths and on August 13.

The former principal of BRD Medical College, Dr. Rajeev Mishra, and his wife Dr. Purnima Shukla were arrested by the UP Special Task force from Kanpur yesterday itself.

With another tragedy taking place, it seems that the problems are set to increase for the Yogi Government and the BRD Medical College. The situation calls for an urgent look at the facilities provided by the hospital and a strict action should be carried out against the culprit.
