We are receiving nearly 256 children every day. Until midnight on 27 August, there were 342 patients in the pediatrics department, of whom 17 died. Until midnight on 28 August, there were 344 patients on the bed; 25 of them died.”
BRD is the same hospital where nearly 60 children had died due to lack of oxygen supply between 7 and 11 August, in what was clearly a case of grave medical negligence.
Over 70 children died at the biggest government hospital in Gorakhpur in early August and horror has returned again within a month. The tragedy at the Gorakhpur hospital had prompted a public outcry. The chief minister formed a committee to probe the deaths and on August 13.
The former principal of BRD Medical College, Dr. Rajeev Mishra, and his wife Dr. Purnima Shukla were arrested by the UP Special Task force from Kanpur yesterday itself.
