Cross voting rule the first hour of RS polls in Gujarat

Polling for the three seats in Rajya Sabha from Gujarat has begun and has brought itself much dismay for the Congress party as 6 of its rebel MLAs casted their votes against Ahmed Patel, who is fighting for a RS seat from Congress.

Rebel Congress leader Shankarsinh Vaghela and his six supporters cast their votes in favour of BJP candidate Balwantsinh Rajput, who recently defected from Congress to join the saffron party.

A fight for existence for Congress

After casting his vote, Shankersinh Vaghela openly declared that he did not vote for Ahmed. “Congress MLAs are not happy,” he added.

On the other hand Vaghela’s son, Mahendra Sinh Vaghela, after casting his vote maintained that voting is secret in democracy. Though he is also expected to have walked on his father’s footprints.

Earlier this morning senior Congress leader, Digvijay Singh has tweeted Vaghela asking him not to ‘ditch’ the party. But it seems the appeal did not have any effect on him.

While NCP has maintained its stand till now to support UPA, although it is reported that a few NCP MLAs will stand with BJP. Jayant Patel, NCP MLA told ANI. “[ I ] voted according to whip issued by [our] high command, after all we are the partner of UPA”.

To give some good news to Congress, 17 of its MLAs have casted their votes and no reports of cross voting have sprung up so far.
