The government has sacked Central Board of Film Certification chief Pahlaj Nihalani from the post.
According to the reports, noted screenwriter, songwriter, and poet Prasoon Joshi is expected to take charge. Vidya Balan is another notable selection in the members of the board.
Nihalani was appointed as the chief of the 23-member board in January 2015 and since then, CBFC has been under the scanner as decisions made by the board were challenged and criticized in movies like Udta Punjab, James Bond franchise -Spectre, and Lipstick Under My Burkha.
His candidature as the CBFC chief was said to have been pushed by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which also supported the controversial FTII chairman Gajendra Chauhan.
“This is an excellent replacement. Prasoon Joshi is a creative thinker and allows filmmakers to flourish. As someone who has been a part of our industry, Smriti Irani understood the problems we were facing” – said filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar.
As the welcome wishes and tweets have started to pour in for the incoming Chairman, Prasoon Joshi, here’s a quick look at who he is.
Joshi is the first Indian to head the Cannes Lions Titanium jury at the Cannes International Advertising Festival in June 2014 and was chosen as a ‘Young Global Leader 2006’ by the forum of Young Global Leaders, an affiliate of the World Economic Forum.
He has also received National awards for Best Lyrics for ‘Chittagong’ and ‘Taare Zameen Par’.
Before he was appointed the chairperson of CBFC, Nihalani produced BJP’s campaign video for the 2014 general elections, Har Har Modi, Ghar Ghar Modi.
While the move is being welcomed by all the sections of the society, only time will decide how things will unfold for the Film Industry.
