Rajesh Yadav, leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) was shot dead near the Tarachand hostel of Allahabad University on Monday night.
Soon after the murder, the BSP supporters were enraged and went on a rampage on Tuesday morning and burnt public vehicles, protesting against the state police.
The supporters demanded an early arrest of the culprits and carried out a violent protest along with torching a roadways bus for the same. Heavy police force was rushed near the Indian Press Crossing to control the situation.
A group of journalists also came under fire and sustained injuries in the clashes. However, police asserted that the entire situation is now under control.
Yadav was shot at around 2:30 AM outside a hostel at the Allahabad University. Yadav, 46, was hit in the stomach and died on the way to a private hospital.
Yadav was accompanied by his friend Dr. Mukul Singh when the attackers started throwing stones at Yadav’s car and then shot the BSP leader.
Investigations reveal that Yadav went to meet someone at Tara Chand Hostel where he had an argument with some people, and the attackers were furious over the same.
Police have lodged a case and are trying to identify the culprits.
Rajesh Kumar Yadav had contested the last Vidhan Sabha elections from the Jaunpur seat of Bhadohi district.
